CHAPTER TWO

Offensive Strategy

ARRANGEMENT OF THE HAND

A skillful player does not arrange his hand. A quick glance is all he needs to tell him what it contains and how he should play it. If you do arrange it, however, the following “don'ts” may be useful.

Don't keep honors on the right side. When playing fast, you may accidentally expose them.

Don't separate the tiles of your hand into groups. Your opponents can draw too many conclusions about your progress from this.

Don't try to maintain a very systematic arrangement during the game. You should constantly be watching your opponents and their discards, keeping in mind the contents of your hand. You can too easily miss an important move.

Don't arrange in the same way every time. An observant player will be quick to learn your system and deduce your plans and progress from watching where you put the tiles you draw.

Don't forget to keep a discard ready for each two-tile element, as explained below. It may be wise to keep each discard next to the element with which you associate it.
